"N. Scott Momaday has walked on."
The first of the many times I heard Momaday read was at the University of Oklahoma in the 1970's. The last time was three years ago at St. John's College. I only chronicle these occasions to invoke the memory of the courage his living voice gave me to believe in the power of poetry. I urge you to listen to Momaday's reading of "Colors of the Night" and "The Delight Song of Tsoai-talee." There is a voice in those words that is ancient and wise and calls us to know who we truly are when we hear the thunder or the chatter of a stream -- we shiver with delight as we recognize our own voice and our own words.
